What is child abuse or neglect?Child abuse/neglect is physically hurting a child, sexually molesting a child, failing to provide proper care or depriving a child of support or affection.

Do I have to report suspected child abuse or neglect?Members of the public, including professionals who work with children, have an obligation to report to a child welfare service provider if they have reasonable grounds to suspect that a child is or may be in need of protection.

What are reasonable grounds? You do not need to be sure that a child is or may be in need of protection to make a report to a child welfare service provider. “Reasonable grounds” are what an average person, exercising normal and honest judgment, would suspect.

You do not need to be certain that abuse or neglect has occurred to make a report.Your identity will be confidential and can only be shared with your permission. You cannot be sued if you have acted based on reasonable grounds and in good faith.
