Description

The On-Call After Hours Worker is a casual employment position.

Under the direction of the on-call supervisor, the on-call worker is responsible for responding to all calls received by the agency outside of normal office hours.  This person is responsible for the provision of a broad range of child welfare services including intake, assessment, and clinical interventions with children and their families.  This person will be required to initiate investigations of abuse/neglect, offer crisis intervention services, provide emergency financial assistance, admit children into care, and ensure that children living either in their own home, or children in the care of the agency, are safe and protected.

The position requires the skill and ability to engage with both voluntary and involuntary clients; knowledge of child development; the ability to work independently;  the ability to prioritize; excellent communication skills; the ability to be non judgmental, exercise good judgment, maintain objectivity when working under pressure; and the ability to work cooperatively with other service providers.

On-Call Training is provided by the Agency.

Duties and Responsibilities

Community Relations

  • Develop and maintain effective working relationships with other emergency service providers, ie. community prevention, community crisis and first response, police, LWDH, Women’s Shelter, and other protection agencies;
  • Display respect and consideration when dealing with clients, foster and AOH parents, other service providers and the general public.

Service Delivery

  • Adhere to the legislative requirements of the CFSA, MCYS Standards and Guidelines, Agency policies and procedures, and the Ontario Child Protection Standards;
  • Perform intake and assessment duties including receiving referrals, screening referrals to determine jurisdiction, and, that there is reasonable and probable grounds to initiate investigation (based on the eligibility spectrum); refer caller to more appropriate service providers, when appropriate; intervene when it is determined children are, or may be, at risk of harm to ensure child’s safety and well-being;
  • Provide or arrange for emergency services such as the apprehension and placement of children; the provision of in-home support; emergency financial assistance;
  • Provide services for children and families located in our jurisdiction;
  • Advise the supervisor immediately of serious occurrences and all other case situations;
  • Seek supervisory involvement and approval on all decisions or actions before an action or decision is made.

Service Administration

  • Complete all case documentation and reports within the required time frames;

Professional Development

  • Participate in in-house training and attend seminars, workshops, and courses, as available.

Qualifications

  • Community College Diploma or High School Diploma with direct related experience, however, others with a combination of skills, education and experience that would allow them to do the job may be considered;
  • Working knowledge of the Child and Family Services Act and Regulations, particularly in the application of Part X relating to Customary Care of the First Nations;
  • Working knowledge of the Ontario Child Protection Standards and Anishinaabe Abinoojii Family Services On-Call manual;
  • Knowledge of and experience in assessing the needs of abused/neglected children, the safety of children within a family unit, the risk of further abuse/neglect to a child, and child development;
  • Knowledge of the structure and operations of Anishinaabe Abinoojii Family Services, communities and family structure, as well as the customs and traditions of the community is preferred;
  • Strong commitment to helping Anishinaabe children and their families by providing services in ways that respect Anishinaabe cultural and spiritual practices;
  • Ability to take direction and work within the policies, procedures, and guidelines and well as the mission, philosophy, and core values of the Agency;
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality;
  • Possession of First Aid and CPR certificates an asset;
  • Must possess a valid Ontario G Driver’s Licence and be willing to travel;
  • Must provide a Vulnerable Sector Check and Driver’s Abstract; and
  • Ability to speak Anishinaabemowin is preferred and a definite asset.
