Duties and Responsibilities
The Prevention & Family Preservation Worker (PFPW) is a temporary Program position. The PFPW provides culturally safe and competent services to families to keep families together, enhance the safety of their children and youth to mitigate the risk that precipitates child welfare intervention and addresses the emotional, physical, mental and spiritual needs of their children. The PFPW roles and responsibilities include, but are not limited to, educating parents about child care and child development, advocating for parents and families, encouraging nurturing behavior and interaction between parents and their children and youth, counselling, engaging traditional practitioners and assisting parents and families in accessing relevant community resources. The PFPW reports directly to the Team Lead/Prevention & Family Preservation Worker.
Team Lead/Prevention & Family Preservation Worker
Community College Diploma with one (1) year direct experience is preferred, however a combination of related education, experience and skills may be considered;
- Knowledge of Customary Care and the practice of Prevention and Family Preservation, service development, social casework management, member First Nation communities and social structures, Anishinaabe family systems, as well as local customs and traditions;
- Knowledge of the Child and Family Services Act and Regulations, child protection standards and reasons for service;
- Knowledge of the administrative structure and operations of AAFS including policies, procedures and guidelines;
- Knowledge and understanding of developmental stages of children and youth including the Traditional Life Stages as understood by the northern communities of Treaty No. 3;
- Ability to provide encouragement, support and education to families in order to facilitate positive parent-child relationships, responsibility and accountability to meet the needs of their children and youth, stimulate child development and promote healthy family functioning and lifestyles;
- Ability to act in a liaison and advocacy role for families, work collaboratively with parents to develop and implement a family development plan that supports parents in achieving their goals;
- Ability to assist and teach parents to develop culturally safe and competent strategies to strengthen parenting skills and knowledge, develop an understanding of age-appropriate expectations and discipline, effective coping skills, positive reinforcement in parenting and to identify and utilize their strengths and support networks;
- Ability to conduct family counselling and group conferencing to mitigate the conditions that led to the risk and to the need for intervention;
- Ability to assist and teach transition aged youth life skills, self-responsibility and independence planning;
- Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with children and youth, families, management and staff, community service providers and other organizations;
- Ability to consult with and take direction from the Team Lead/Prevention & Family Preservation Worker;
- Ability to prepare comprehensive detailed case recordings, reports and case notes;
- Experience working with a computerized data base;
- Excellent time management, organizational, problem-solving, counselling, crisis intervention, and interpersonal skills;
- Excellent oral and written communication skills;
- Current First Aid and CPR Certificates an asset;
- Ability to flex daily work hours as determined by the Team Lead/Prevention & Family Preservation Worker;
- Committed to ensure the highest level of confidentiality at all times;
- Must possess a valid Ontario G Drivers Licence and be willing to travel;
- Must provide a current Vulnerable Sector Check and Drivers Abstract; and
- Ability to speak Anishinaabemowin is preferred and a definite asset.
Include, but not limited to, working in high stress social settings, working with potential aggressive clientele, volatile sociopolitical environments, being called out with no notice to emergency situations, prolonged sitting and driving to semi-remote Anishinaabe communities on rough and winding class “C” roadways and in various weather conditions, exposure to diverse living conditions and community environments and different sociocultural milieus.
Salary Range: $37,696 - $43,700 per annum
